Yoga is for everyone. My yoga practice began in the wake of great suffering and disease. Newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and PTSD in 2017, I, like so many, was ready to believe I was too sick to heal. I became exhausted and completely discouraged by the all too common Western medical approaches of treating symptoms, yet ignoring the patient as a whole system that needed to be healed entirely. I had just barely regained the ability to walk when an inner depth of wisdom led me on a walk and into my first yoga class.
I have a deep respect for being a beginner, and for those who allow themselves to maintain their beginner’s mind. Zen monk Shunryu Suzuki teaches us, “If your mind is empty, it is always ready for anything, it is open to everything. In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s mind there are few. ”
Yoga allowed me an Eastern lens to reevaluate where Western medicine had failed me. Western practices and medications led me further away from myself and ultimately to a state of dis-ease; once yoga found me, the trajectory of my health and therefore future completely shifted. Buddhist teacher Pema Chodron wisely states, “Whether we experience what happens to us as obstacle and enemy or as teacher and friend depends entirely on our perception of reality. It depends on our relationship with ourselves.”
My healing truly began once I learned to cultivate a new relationship with my whole self, mind body & soul, rooted in love and compassion. Each day on my mat, I am taught how vital it is to honor the interconnected nature of physical and mental wellness, and through honoring this principle I began to heal in ways once defined as “impossible.”
Yoga allows and encourages us to let go of what no longer serves you, allowing for unlimited healing potential. Yoga fosters a safe space for self-exploration and encourages self-awareness. Everything we need to thrive we already posses, and through the practice of yoga the path to our purest, whole self is illuminated. Through my practice, I rediscovered the universal knowledge that dwells within us all, intuitively becoming the agent of my own healing.
Now, I am eternally grateful to give back to the practice as a yoga teacher, empowering others to harness their own healing. In yoga, strength built on the mat becomes the foundation for a life of limitless joy, health, and possibility; I hope to spread healing through the world by taking the wisdom that yoga instills off the mat and into our everyday actions.
